Public adjuster for storm and lightning claims

Storm damage claims, from fallen trees to power surges.

One storm can cause damage in several ways at once. A tree on the roof, a surge through the wiring and ice backing up under the shingles can all come from the same event. We document each one.

What the claim covers

What a storm claim can include.

Each kind of storm damage can fall under a different part of your policy, with its own limits. We sort out which part pays for what.

  • Fallen trees and limbs. Damage to the roof, walls and fences, plus tree removal where your policy allows it.
  • Power surges and lightning. Electrical panels, appliances, heating and cooling equipment and electronics.
  • Ice dams. Water that backs up under shingles and into ceilings and walls.
  • Snow and ice load. Roof, gutter and structural damage from the weight of snow and ice.
  • Wind-driven rain. Water that comes in through openings the storm created.
  • Interior and contents damage. Everything that follows from any of the above.

What often gets missed

Where storm claims come up short.

Surge damage that shows up later

Appliances and electronics can fail days or weeks after a strike or surge. Keep a list as things stop working.

Equipment outside the house

Air conditioner boards, well pumps, gate openers and irrigation controllers are often damaged in a surge.

Attics after an ice dam

Wet insulation loses its value and can hold moisture against framing long after the ceiling dries.

Other structures

Fences, sheds, detached garages and carports usually fall under a separate part of the policy.

What to do now

Stay safe, then start the record.

  1. Stay clear of downed power lines and call the utility company.
  2. Photograph fallen trees and damage before anything is moved or removed.
  3. Unplug surge-damaged equipment and keep it until it has been inspected.
  4. Make a list of anything that stopped working after the storm, with the date you noticed.

How we help with storm claims

As your public adjuster, we trace the storm damage through the whole property, inside and out, and match each item to the right part of your policy. We price the repairs in Xactimate, then present the claim and negotiate it for you.

  • Whole-property inspection and photos
  • A list of surge-damaged equipment and contents
  • A line-item Xactimate estimate
  • Negotiation with the carrier through settlement
